Plus UTS, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the South Asia Regional Infrastructure Connectivity (SARIC) initiative, delivered a blended training program to the Government of the Maldives to strengthen the national capacity for sustainable infrastructure and building development.
Delivered through face-to-face sessions and online modules, the program successfully improved technical knowledge, practical knowledge, and policy understanding.
The challenge
Building codes play a critical role in ensuring the safety, sustainability, and quality of the built environment. For the Government of Maldives, strengthening the capacity to implement and update these codes effectively is critical, given the unique challenges posed by its geographical location, climate vulnerability, and rapid urbanisation.
The solution
Experts from the School of Built Environment at UTS designed and delivered a hybrid training program that combined:
- Face-to-face workshops in the Maldives, emphasising applied learning and interactive engagement,
- Online modules delivered via our learning platform Canvas, allowing flexibility and broad accessibility, and
- Tailored content covering engineering fundamentals, sustainable design, regulatory frameworks, and project management.
Co-developed with the Government of the Maldives, the program was designed to equip government officials with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to implement and update building codes. The program aimed to improve code compliance and foster safer, more resilient construction practices while combining international best practices with local context.
The results
- 26+ government officials trained across relevant departments.
- Improved understanding of building codes, sustainability practices, and project evaluation.
- Positive feedback on the blended delivery model that allowed ongoing engagement and reflection.
Through DFAT and SARIC’s support, UTS delivered an impactful training solution tailored to the needs of the Maldives, setting a foundation for stronger infrastructure outcomes in the region.
